My 1985 Mustang GT - Rollbar |

|
I wanted a rollbar for safety and chassis stiffness, but I could not find a pre-bent kit that fit my needs so I made my own. I needed a 4-point bar that included a one-piece diagonal from the drivers head to the passenger side floor. The one-piece diagonal is a requirement for most road racing organizations, but not drag racing. By including the diagonal, my roll bar can easily be converted to a legal road racing cage by just adding the forward bars. I first made a template for the main hoop by using 1.75” exhaust tubing. I notched the tubing to bend it and then I tack welded it together to keep its shape. When I was satisfied with the shape I took the exhaust tubing over to a friend’s house and we used his tubing bender to make the actual main hoop. The rest of the bars are straight and I just had to notch them to fit. The bases of the main hoop fit inside of 2”x3”x.125” tubing that runs cross-car and ties into my subframe connectors. The main hoop is also bolted in at the factory B-Pillar seatbelt mounts. The rear struts land on reinforcement plates that sit on top of the rear frame rails right next to the shock towers. |
