In December 2005, I received a Weiand X-Celerator Intake Manifold (Part # 7515) as a gift.
I wanted the intake manifold because although I was happy with my Edelbrock RPM Performer dual plane intake I wanted to switch to a single plane intake manifold.
The first thing that I noticed about the new intake was that it really was designed for a 289 cu in motor, not a 347. The carb opening was too small and the ports were not tall enough to come close to matching my Canfield cylinder heads.
I used my die grinder to open up the carb opening, but there was not enough material on the intake to open up the ports to match my heads.
I had a friend with a TIG welder add a bunch of material onto the tops of all of the ports. I then used a file and a grinder to bring the sealing faces back to a flat plane. Next I made a template of the cylinder head ports out of Plexiglas which I then used to mark the correct port openings onto my new intake manifold. Lastly, I had to open up the intake ports to match my template, being careful to make sure that I opened up the entire intake runner, not just the port opening.
The end result is a great intake manifold.
